YES! It’s stone crab season. And we figured the best way to kick off a new series of articles is with an old favorite.
Sarasota LOVES its stone crab! (At least most of us do.) Yes, ordering these may stretch the budget. But they’re worth the splurge if you can muster it.
π€ Walt’s catches their own stones. You really can’t get these any fresher. It’s right off their boat, straight to your table. The only thing you need to decide is what size claws you will enjoy.
π΅ When I was there for lunch, they had stone crab on special. $30 for 1lb of medium claws. It’s certainly not a “Value Meal”, but it might ease the sticker shock! Even though the mediums were a great price, I couldn’t resist the large size!π
Whetting Your Appetite. Yes, you have some choices to make.
β’ Size β They run medium to colossal (all sizes may not be available)
β’ Temp β You can get them hot or cold
β’ Dipping Options – Mustard sauce or melted butter (HEY, why not get both!! π)
Tasty Nuggets. The stone crab meat is super sweet and oddly addicting. You can plow through a 1lb platter in pretty short order. You’re going to have to work just a bit. But they do an expert job cracking that hard shell, leaving you with just some finish work.
π· PICTURES ARE WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS
Here you go. This is what a 1lb platter of large stone crab at Walt’s Fish Market and Restaurant will look like when they deliver it to your table.
I went for both sauces! Why not??
β²οΈ Let’s step into the Wayback Machine. I know a lot of you remember Moore’s Stone Crab out on the north end of Longboat Key. π It’s now Shore Longboat Key.
Let’s say you’d like to have stone crab in the comfort and privacy of your own home. (This is where the “market” part of Walt’s comes in.) Yes, you could buy some of their house-made mustard sauce. OR you could whip up your own using the recipe from Moore’s! It’s easy. Of course, we have the recipe for you!

You’re going to love how simple that is to make!
β THE BOTTOM LINE
It’s stone crab season (OCT 15 thru MAY 1). You should really treat yourself to some of our best locally caught seafood. Even if you don’t spring for an entire 1lb (or more) order, you can have an appetizer portion. Walt’s is super casual and a great place to dine outside and enjoy some beautiful Sarasota weather.
TIP β Walt’s can be pretty chaotic on weekends. Try it for lunch to avoid the crowds!
