As of today fall is officially upon us. Being originally from the Midwest, I can tell you that fall means a real change of lifestyle. Kids are back at school, days are getting shorter (but more colorful) and the last of the summer harvest hits markets and farm stands.
Here in Sarasota were luckier than the folks up north. We wont need to wait until next summer to enjoy fresh, farm grown fruits and vegetables. While you can always choose the convenience of buying from one of our local supermarkets, there are better choices, the obvious one being one of our great farmers markets.
The Downtown Partnership of Sarasota has been operating the Downtown Farmers Market for years. Every Saturday you can wander through the market and purchase all the fresh produce you can haul away. The market is located at the intersection of Lemon and Main Streets and is open from 7am until noon. Its not only great for those of us who like to have nice fresh ingredients to cook for ourselves, but, I always see some of our local chefs stocking up for the week there too.
In the next few weeks were going to have another excellent farmers market option. Beginning in October, the Siesta Key Farmers Market will begin its operation. The market which boasts the slogan, Dont Panic, its Organic! will be setting up shop in the Davidsons Plaza parking lot on Ocean Boulevard in Siesta Village. It will be open from 7am to noon every Sunday rain or shine. Judging from their list of vendors the Siesta Key Farmers Market will have something for everyone. Once they open up, well give you an update on how things are going.
So, if youre looking for some great fresh, locally grown produce, look no further than your neighborhood farmers market. Just because its fall doesnt mean we have to settle for 6 months of tasteless tomatoes!
