A Burger A Week – Patricks 1481
Let’s see if an old burger favorite can turn new tricks!
π« We had a little hiccup in our Tuesday newsletter. YES, 1 Β½ lbs. of salt does seem like an awful lot for a Greek Salad (the correct amount is 1 Β½ tsp.). Thanks to those of you that took time out of your day to get in touch. There were some very humorous notes (more than a chuckle or two). And thanks for reading so closely. If you see something, say something! We appreciate it!! π Now, on to our burger…
ππ We’ve got an interactive Burger Map to help us track our Sarasota A Burger A Week adventures. Now your burger info is just a short click away! Take a look at our Sarasota Burger Tracker! – A BURGER A WEEK MAP πΊοΈ
Sarasota is known for a lot of things. Here’s a short list to jog your memory… π§
β‘The #1 beach in the country (SK Beach) β’ Our fantastic (but sometimes brutally hot) weather β’ The Ringling Museum (and Ringling School of Art) β’ The 5th Best Place to Live in the US β’ Burgers π β’ St. Armands Circle β’ The Circus! π€ΉββοΈ β’ And… Architecture π¨
It’s a list that any area of roughly half a million people would be more than proud of.
This week’s stop is at the strange intersection where burgers and architecture meet in an unlikely way.
This is (for those of you that already don’t know) The Kress Building β¬οΈ
It’s been a landmark of downtown Sarasota architecture since this “Art Deco” building was constructed all the way back in 1932 (yes, that’s 91 years ago!). It also once housed one of Sarasota’s more “famous” burger spots.
Back when Patricks was serving up burgers from their Five Points location, things downtown looked different. For one thing, no roundabout. For another, it was β¦ let’s just say, a little scruffy. Things have certainly changed since then.
And things have changed for Patricks too. In 2011 they moved east up Main from the historic building that they had called home since 1985. With their new space (next to Mattison’s City Grille) came a new handle, Patricks 1481. Those four digits tagged onto the back of their name had meaning. It’s a literal recognition of their new locale, 1481 Main Street.
In the 38 years since Patricks has been feeding locals and visitors, more than a couple of folks have taken home a Patricks paycheck. Our Ride Along taster today is the perfect fit for this stop.
James Carter is a professional. He’s one of those hospitality industry pros that greets all his guests with a smile, a friendly word and, most times, a handshake. He knows his business. AND he lists the “old” Patricks on his cocktail-creating CV.
He’s a diehard Atlanta Braves fan. Which, over the past 30 years, has had way more ups than downs (I wish the same could be said for my White Sox π). He also has some Washington Redskins gear in his closet. So, I guess things all even out in the end. ππ
James never tended bar in the “new” Patricks. His history was back at Five Points. This updated space is a far cry from its former self. It’s going to be fun to see if he still feels at home. π
The inside of 1481 Main Street is crisp and clean. It definitely has an upscale urban feel to it.
You’ll feel comfortable whether you’re in the dining room, at the bar, or enjoying a streetside table.
Since James was part of the Kress Building Patricks crew, it makes him the perfect person to share their namesake Kress Burger with! π
Let’s talk about our Patricks 1481 burger experience…
RESTAURANT: PATRICKS 1481 (1481 Main St. (941) 955-1481)
DATE OF VISIT: APRIL 20, 2023
STOP #: 31 OF 52
BURGER TASTED: THE KRESS BURGER
π OUR TASTING NOTES
π This burger is served as listed on the menu: Bacon cheeseburger topped with crispy onion straws. Served with a side of homemade chili ($15)
β’ This burger was super beefy. I mean, REAL burgery flavor in every single bite!
β’ James loved the presentation, including that cup of chili! (This is the FIRST and, Iβm guessing, probably the LAST burger that will automatically come with a side of chili! πΆοΈ I wonder how many people just pour that chili right over the top of the burger?…) π€
β’ This is a BIG burger. It’s a Β½ lb. patty without any of the toppings. We both thought it was cooked perfectly and was super juicy.
β’ The FRIES! ** You knew we’d get here eventually. They were extra crispy and seasoned just right. James noticed that they stayed crispy even after they sat on the plate for a bit (that usually doesn’t happen, the “sitting on the plate” part, I mean π). π
β’ Our service was excellent. Donna took great care of us. She has been working at Patricks since James was slinging drinks there. So she has some experience!
Let’s check out how all of this looked when we ordered it…
BURGER TAKEAWAYS: Even at $15, this is still a great burger deal. There’s a LOT of burger here β’ The Whole Foods and State Street Garages are both super convenient for parking. β’ LOVE that at least some burger toppings were on the bottom β’ OH, we didn’t even have time to mention THE BACON! π₯β’ Itβs service ++ at Patricks!
π SNEAK PEEK: Our next burger stop is on the North Trail. I didn’t even know this place had a burger, but it does! You can also settle in for a game of chess and a beer! βοΈπΊ
