A Burger A Week – The Public House
Sometimes the best things are found in the most unlikely places.
ππ We’re doing some Sarasota burger giveaways! Yes, that translates to Burger Prizes! We’ll be serving these up over on our Facebook Sarasota Burger Page. JOIN THAT HERE. We’ll also be giving those of you who aren’t members of that group some opportunities down the burger road. Good Luck!
π This restaurant has closed since this article was originally published.
I didn’t recognize the address right off the bat. Then I rememberedβ¦ Detweiler’s. This is the Parkway Collections Plaza. Better known, at least to me, as the plaza where Detwiler’s is located.
It is also the plaza where The Public House happens to be serving “Modern Pub Fare.” There is also an Indian Restaurant, Maharaja Indian Cuisine. A movie theater, the Parkway 8 Cinemas. And oddly, a pet store, Family Pets, whose website says they sell hedgehogs?? π¦
I’m not really in the market for a low-mileage hedgehog at the moment. So, it seemed pointless to just window shop. Plus, it was burger time, after all.
The Public House has been open for about four years here at the Parkway Collections Plaza. I seem to remember that when they first opened, it was carryout only?? β Someone check me on that, please…
If they were carryout only at the beginning of their restaurant life, they are undoubtedly full service now! The place was just starting to fill up when I get there. It was around noontime on an August Monday. We all know those can be slow.
Seems like they attract a crowd of regular old Sarasota locals. In the four years since they’ve been open, it was clear that they have gained a nice loyal following. I was hoping it was because of the burgers!
There is a large, but not intimidating, selection of burgers to choose from. The Farm House Burger read like it was loaded to the gills (Applewood smoked bacon, pulled pork, cheddar cheese, fried onion rings, and, of course, who could forget the smokey ranch!)
To narrow things down a touch, I checked their website before my visit. I discovered that their Public House Cheeseburger had the most “pops” and reviews. That one would be mine!
Let’s take a look at how all of this came out…
RESTAURANT: THE PUBLIC HOUSE (6240 N. Lockwood Ridge Rd. (941) 822-0795)
DATE OF VISIT: AUGUST 1, 2022
STOP #: 5 OF 52
BURGER TASTED: THE PUBLIC HOUSE CHEESEBURGER
π OUR TASTING NOTES
π This burger is served as listed on the menu: Β½ pound burger patty, lettuce, tomato & pickle ($12.99)
As you will see from the photos, it was cooked exactly the way I like it (medium). When I started on this burger project, I thought I would run into a fair number of burgers that would come out of the kitchen over or under done. Not the case (at least yet…). Keep up the good work!! π₯
This burger tasted “meaty.” I’m not sure I have a better way to describe that flavor. It really tasted like a burger. I think that may have something to do with the fact that it wasn’t topped with a lot of ingredients that were competing for time with my taste buds.
This is a classic cheeseburger. Nothing fancy here, just super well executed. I can see why it had the most “pops” on The Public House burger roster.
The fries. Yes, these fries are large. When my order came out, I saw the size of the fries and immediately thought they would not be my thing. (I LOVED the skinny fries at Baker & Wife). But much to my delight, they were delicious. Surprisingly crunchy and light for all of their heft. π They also offer homemade potato chips as a side option.
I picked the American cheese option. I think I made a good choice, for taste testing anyway. The provolone + smoked gouda combo would have been an excellent play here. Order that!
Let’s check out how all of this looked…
BURGER TAKEAWAYS: A solid burger value for the price ($12.99) β’ The service was fantastic. Carly did a great job! β’ A pretty standard burger bun lets the burger do all the talking β’ They have 18 beers on tap! (No, I did not sample πΊ) β’ MEATY!! β’ It’s an atmosphere where everyone will be comfortable
π SNEAK PEEK: We’re navigating that sometimes harrowing trip over the John Ringling Bridge for stop #6. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it will be worth it!… π€

Just tried The Public House cheeseburger. Meaty is the perfect word. Very enjoyable. And I am a skinny fries guy. But these fat fries were scrumptious.
