Late last week I was sitting at my desk minding my own business, when my email box chimed that familiar sound. Innocently enough I opened my email and out popped a special news flash from C’est Cheese here in Sarasota. On a daily basis I get emails from lots of Sarasota restaurants and markets. But, this message from C’est Cheese wasn’t any ordinary email message. It’s contained information on how I could get my hands on what I consider the best cheese on the planet. As a matter of fact, it’s nicknamed the “King of Cheese”. I am of course talking about Epoisses, that runny, salty, gooey, stinky carton of goodness.
For the uninitiated, Epoisses is a French rind washed cheese that has its roots back in the 16th century. As you can see from the photo Epoisses has a great runny interior, so gooey in fact that a lot of times it is served with a spoon rather than a cheese knife. You almost need to serve it in the wooden box it comes in or else you could very well be chasing around the plate you put it on. The cheese itself has a pretty strong scent. But, don’t let that put you off, it’s not as strong tasting as the smell would lead you to believe.
Now Epoisses isn’t necessarily difficult to find, at least in most areas that have a gourmet market or two. But, when a notice that it’s currently in stock comes right to your email box, that’s hard to beat. You can pick up some Epoisses here in Sarasota at C’est Cheese, Morton’s Market and Whole Foods. The cheese isn’t exactly a bargain at $18 to $24 per carton, but it’s not something you’re going to be having every evening anyway. If you’re thinking you would like to broaden your cheese eating horizons and you want a special treat, Epoisses, The King of Cheese, will deliver on both fronts.
