Blue Plate Special – Dino Ribs!
There are some prehistoric size beef ribs right in our own backyard!
When I think “Dino Ribs” I can really only think of one thing. And, if you spent some of your formative years in the ’60s, you can only think of one thing too…
Fast forward to my current age. I now completely realize that Dino (the pet) and Dino (the dinosaur-sized ribs) are spelled the same but are definitely not the same. Not something I’d really given much thought to as a Midwest elementary schooler.
π For the sake of this piece, we’ll be talking about the ribs versus the pet! π¦Β
Everyone in Bedrock seemed to get along A-OK. Even without all of the “modern conveniences” (It felt like Pebbles & Bamm Bamm didn’t even miss having a smartphone π±). No Tik Tok, no Keurig, no Netflix or Spotify. There was, however, a whole LOT of bowling! (AND, of course, lodge meetings! π¦¬)
𦣠In Flintstone-Land, everything seemed BIG. And that included the food. I mean, you had Sabre-Toothed Tiger Chops, Roast Dodo Bird, and, of course, Fred’s favorite, the Brontosaurus Ribs (He eats those when he’s “not very hungry!” π). Let’s just say that none of those selections come on a tapas plate. They’re all big!
As interesting (and delicious) as all those pre-historic dining options sound, only one is currently offered as a special in one of our local BBQ restaurants…
For just over seven years now, Brick’s Smoked Meats (1528 State St. (941) 993-1435) has been serving BBQ-loving Sarasota diners their 18-hour USDA Prime Brisket. And folks have been eating it up.
β‘οΈ Now, along comes something “special.” When I say Smoked-Braised Beef Short Rib, what comes to mind? Is it this?
Here’s another look just to see if weβre on the same page.
Well, this is precisely what you should be thinking of! Yes, it’s BIG (this giant rib weighs in at just shy of 2 pounds!). Yes, it’s super beefy tasting. And YES, it is cooked to perfection! That is a Dino Rib Special that even old Freddie Boy would be happy to enjoy! π
When you really think about it, this is basically “Pot Roast on a Stick.” And it is delicious!
A few things… When they bring this out to your table, your first thought (at least mine) is, “WOW.” Your second thought (again, at least mine) is, “How am I going to eat all of that?” And your third thought is, “I may need a nap when this is over! π€”.
If you wanted to, you could use a little bit of willpower (and common sense) and split this between two beef rib loving people. But in all honesty, once this gets delivered to your table, you won’t want to. You’ll most likely say, “All mine.” I know I did!
π More than a few folks walking by my table exclaimed, “Oh man, that looks great!”
I am generally a “sauce on the side” kind of guy. But in this particular case, let the kitchen do the saucing for you. They’re the experts. You will be happy you did!
Of course, you’ll need something to go with all of that savory smoked meat.
I thought the Lone Star Caviar would make a nice “go with.” And it did. A completely different flavor than the beef rib makes for just the right complement. π The State Street Corn or the Potato Salad would have also been excellent choices here.
If you’re eating your Dino Rib Special at the restaurant, you’ll have some seating choices to make.

Sit wherever you’re comfortable. You’ll get that famous Brick’s service no matter where you end up. Yes, they serve some great BBQ, but they also know how to take care of their Dino Rib-eating customers.
