The LIST – September 2023
We’re heading into fall. Believe it???
π Hopefully, everyone made it through Idalia in one piece. π
We’re stepping into fall. π
Yep, I know it doesn’t feel like it yet… But there will be a time in the not so distant future where it’ll be comfortable enough to dine outdoors again. It’s coming, trust me!
π Hey, we’ve got some new additions to the dineSarasota.com database for you. That’s right, we promised that we would add some new places, and we would hate to break that promise (trust is everything in the food writing biz π).
Let’s have a look…
The UTC area has a new brewery! πΊ Fat Point Brewing (257 N Cattlemen Rd. (941) 491-2827) has opened across from The Mall. Yes, they still have the Latitude Attitude IPA they served in Punta Gorda. Their menu includes some bar bites, handhelds, and tacos.
This one is a little different. Downtown Sarasota has welcomed Toastique (10 S. Lemon Ave. (941) 312-4099) to the neighborhood! Located on the first floor of The Mark condo building (right next to Beso!). If gourmet toast and juices are your thing, then your eyes will light up when you walk through the door. π€©
Our last new addition is the most highly anticipated. Chef Gino Calleja and business partner Jose Rojas have taken over the old Opus Restaurant & Lounge space in Gulf Gate. People will certainly be talking about Kolucan Mexican Bar and Grill (6644 Gateway Ave. (941) 921-3133). If Chef Gino’s past is an indication of the future, this will be a super popular spot. They will be serving upscale and creative Mexican cuisine and cocktails.
π They were set to open for dinner this week. But, due to Idalia, they have pushed back their opening until Wednesday, September 6th.

We did have a couple of subtractions from our database. Sadly, Public House and the St. Armands Oyster Bar have closed. ** I’m going to miss the Crawfish Etouffee** OH, and of course, the burger from Public House (If you’d care to reminisce…).
The dineSarasota.com restaurant database now stands at 382 local Sarasota area restaurants!
All right. Openings and closing are out of the way. It’s time to talk about our Top 5. Let’s see who made it…
OK, this is just a reshuffling of the chairs from August. We won’t spend a ton of time here on each of these. I’m sure you know them well enough at this point. We’ll just hit the highlights for you.
#5 Shebeen Irish Pub & Kitchen (6641 Midnight Pass Rd., (941) 952-3070)
Irish cuisine and music on Siesta Key. Located just off the Stickney Point Bridge. SlΓ‘inte!! πΊ
#4 Osteria Southside (1812 S. Osprey Ave. (941) 361-3200)
Casual Italian fare. Southside Village. Get the Meatball Salad. I know it sounds strange, but you will not be disappointed!
#3 Bar Hana (1289 N. Palm Ave. (941) 536-9717
Upscale cocktails and a whole lot more. A great place to go if you crave something a little special in the drink department!
#2 Palm Avenue Deli (1297 N. Palm Ave. (941) 263-3742)
Deli! I think that’s all that really needs to be said. Great sandwiches, soups, salads, and more. And the same owners as #3 Bar Hana. This restaurant group must be doing something right.
#1 Beso (30 S. Lemon Ave. (941) 279-2999)
If sharing is your thing, then Beso will be your happy place. Tapas lovers, rejoice. You’ve got a downtown spot to celebrate. Located on the first floor of The Mark (corner of State St. & Lemon Ave.).
Here’s the rest of the Top 10:
Florence & The Spice Boys, Namo Izakaya, Chateau Sarasota, Meshugana Deli (Two delis this month!), and Pho Cali round things out for this month.
HERE’S THE COMPLETE LIST OF THE TOP 25 FOR SEPTEMBER 2023!
β‘οΈ Finally, it’s been quite a weather week. A number of our local restaurants (especially those near the water) may have had some bad outcomes from the storm. In the coming days and weeks, you may see them reach out via FB or some other means. Help out if you can!
And, finally, finally, we’ve got our monthly Sarasota area food news roundup for you. These are some things we think you should know about. They’ve been written by talented writers from around our local food journalism community. Enjoy! π©
